The Life That Got Aawy

The night is bitter,
The stars have lost their glitter;
The winds grow colder
And suddenly I’m older –
And all because of the life that got away.

No more its eager call,
The writing’s on the wall;
The dreams I’ve dreamed have all
Gone astray.

The hopes that drove me
Has gone off and undone me.
That great beginning
Has seen the final inning.
Don’t know what happened. It’s all a crazy game!

No more that all-time thrill,
For I’ve been through the mill –
And never a full life will
Come my way.

Good riddance, good-bye!
Ev’ry trick of life’s I’m on to.
But, fools will be fools –
And where’s mine gone to?

The road gets rougher,
It’s lonelier and tougher.
With hope I burn up –
Tomorrow it may turn up.
There’s just no letup the live-long night and day!
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than
A lone-ly old man looking for
The life that got away…
The life that got away.
